Why GSK?

Uniting science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together.

GSK is a global biopharma company with a special purpose – to unite science, technology and talent to get ahead of disease together – so we can positively impact the health of billions of people and deliver stronger, more sustainable shareholder returns – as an organisation where people can thrive. We prevent and treat disease with vaccines, specialty and general medicines. We focus on the science of the immune system and the use of new platform and data technologies, investing in four core therapeutic areas (infectious diseases, HIV, respiratory/ immunology and oncology).

Our success absolutely depends on our people. While getting ahead of disease together is about our ambition for patients and shareholders, it’s also about making GSK a place where people can thrive. We want GSK to be a place where people feel inspired, encouraged and challenged to be the best they can be. A place where they can be themselves – feeling welcome, valued, and included. Where they can keep growing and look after their wellbeing. So, if you share our ambition, join us at this exciting moment in our journey to get Ahead Together.

Department Description

The Encoded Technologies (ET) group located in Cambridge, MA uses DNA-encoded libraries (DELs) to identify new chemical matter and small molecules to impact a range of disease areas. Within ET, the Affinity Selections & Biophysics team focuses on applying DEL technology to proteins of interest, screening for binders, and using biophysical assays to validate small molecule binders. For an overview of DEL selections see: Clark, M. A. et al. Design, Synthesis and Selection of DNA-Encoded Small-Molecule Libraries. Nat. Chem. Biol. 2009, 5, 647-654.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated student or recent graduate for a six-month, full-time co-op within our ET Affinity Selections & Biophysics group. This role focuses on implementing mass spectrometry-based protein characterization, including method development and protein-compound evaluation using techniques like intact mass evaluation, covalent crosslinking, and site mapping. Some hands-on mass spectrometry experience is preferred, particularly a foundational understanding of protein intact mass analysis and/or peptide mapping. Extensive expertise is not required. The role will also offer complimentary foundation in biophysical techniques assessing protein folding, function, and the impact of protein-ligand binding. As a member of our multi-disciplinary team, you will also gain insight into broader aspects of the DNA-encoded library technology and the early drug discovery process.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, Chemistry, or similar disciplines.
  • Prior full-time research experience required – co-op, internship, REU, etc.
  • Must have knowledge and practical understanding of the scientific method and demonstrated experience in experimental design.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the 6-month co-op (January ~ June 2026).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with protein mass spectrometry techniques (i.e. intact mass analysis, site mapping, HDX-MS, XL-MS, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with biophysical or biochemical techniques (i.e. gel electrophoresis, DSF, SPR, BLI, MST, alphaLISA) and molecular biology techniques (i.e PCR).
  • Motivation to tackle new biophysical challenges and design new assays.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must successfully pass a drug screen and background check prior to assignment target start date.
  • Please note: If you do not receive an automated email after submitting your application, be sure to check your spam folder.

Benefits

  • While GSK embraces a flexible work environment, we do require certain positions to be onsite.
