Department Description

Carrier Unit 1 is a group within the Microbial Drug Substance team, part of the Vaccines Technical Research and Development (TRD) group. Carrier Unit 1 supports the upstream process development for fusion proteins that are involved in the new MAPS technology (Multiple Antigen Presenting System). The team focuses on recombinant protein expression in bacterial systems and is responsible for the fermentation development, scale up testing and tech transfer to manufacturing.

Job Description

As a co-op within the Carrier Unit group, you will integrate with a multidisciplinary team in charge of fermentation and purification of recombinant proteins. You will be in close contact with experts in upstream, downstream and various analytical technologies.  Your mission will be focused on the development of scalable fermentation processes to support recombinant protein production in bacterial systems. This role will work with small scale reactors to test, model and evaluate process scalability.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related disciplines.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 6 month assignment (June ~ December 2024).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a wet lab
  • Understanding of basic microbiology lab techniques, e.g. pipetting, sterile technique, solution prep
  • Hands on experience with bacterial cell culture is preferred
  • Interest in coding and modeling is a bonus
